Acrylic sheets, commonly known as plexiglass or Perspex, are flat lightweight thermoplastic panels made from poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA). Built to be impact and scratch resistant, they serve as a practical alternative to coloured glass at less than half the weight. In certain applications, acrylic is bonded with polycarbonate (PC) to bring together the scratch resistance of acrylic and the impact strength of PC. The quality and grade of acrylic is determined by its polymerisation process and co-monomer composition. Cell cast acrylic, where polymerisation and moulding happen simultaneously, produces the highest molecular mass and superior optical clarity.

Being part of the thermoplastics family, acrylic sheets can be repeatedly heated to their melting point and cooled again without significant degradation. Rather than burning, acrylic softens and liquefies when heated, making it well suited for injection moulding, compression moulding and recycling. When heated to its glass transition temperature instead, the material becomes flexible enough to bend and fold into shape, holding its form once cooled while retaining its transparent or translucent light properties throughout.
